Material engineering
Problem Statement:
Although technological advancement has already pushed silicon-based computing to its physical speed and size limits, further innovations are still expected to be based on this cheap, widely available material, which makes up almost 28% of the Earth’s crust. Microelectronics industry is fully based on Silicon for almost 80 years. Silicon is not interchangeable, and ALEO main research direction remains the Silicon Photonics Applications to create coupled devices, sharing both electronic and photonic activity towards optical communication in computers.

Proposed Solution:
In addition to above Silicon expertise, ALEO Research Team works also on different projects using other materials such as Germanium (Ge), Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), Gallium Nitride (GaN), Aluminium Gallium Arsenide (AlGaAs), Indium (In), Diamond, Graphene, Silicon (Si), Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) and more. More than 40 devices have been developed at ALEO in the last decade (2014-2024).
